Preston Dawson was born on April 15, 1846 in Washington County, Springfield, Kentucky.  He enlisted as a private in Company H of the 5th Regiment Cavalry of the United States Colored Troops on September, 17 1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky.  Preston's first wife, Lucinda, had a daughter Fannie born in 1869, son James born in 1872, and daughter Eliza born in 1874.  According to the 1880 census, Preston's second wife, Cynthia had the following children:  Mary, George, Walter, Louis, Albert, Samuel, Howard, Annie, Estel, Ellen, and Frances. 

Preston drew a pension from the Federal Government until he died on September 21, 1933.  He was buried at the Bethlehem Baptist Church.  His second wide Cynthia died on September 1, 1957 at the age of 97.
